Surfing in Morocco in winter

While Europe gets cold and dark, the coast around Taghazout and Tamraght stays sunny. Winter is the main surf season in Morocco: the swell is bigger and more regular, and the days are mild.

Why winter is the main surf season

From autumn to spring the Atlantic sends bigger, more regular swell to Taghazout Bay. Waves arrive in long, clean sets, which is what experienced surfers travel for. It is also the time most surfers visit the bay.

Can beginners surf in winter?

Yes. When the swell is big, our instructors choose more sheltered beaches where the white water stays gentle, such as the beaches around Tamraght and Aourir. Every lesson is adapted to your level. See our beginner guide and the spots we use.

The weather

Days are usually sunny and mild, and you can relax on the rooftop in the afternoon sun. Evenings and early mornings are fresh, so bring a warm top or a light jacket. The ocean is cool all year, so you surf in a wetsuit – it is included in your surf week.

If the waves are too big

Big winter swells can be too much for some levels. In that case your session is replaced by a free trip to Paradise Valley or a visit to Souk El Had in Agadir, and you surf again when the conditions suit you.
